How much does IVF cost?

Australia is one of the most generous countries when it comes to government funding for assisted reproductive treatments. IVF and ICSI are affordable due to the significant Medicare benefits available for medical infertility. ​To help you understand your entitlements, click here.

What is NOT included?

• Cost of medication (approx. $150 - $300)
• Egg collection with anaesthesia (fees depend on hospital health insurance)
• Fresh embryo transfer (fees depend on hospital health insurance)
• Embryo freezing
  
• Consultation with Dr Fong outside a treatment cycle
• Pre IVF work up and investigations
• Transferring embryos from a frozen-thawed cycle (frozen embryo transfer cycles are treated as an independent cycle and will incur an additional fee)
• Surgery (for example, private laparoscopy, hysteroscopy or any other gynaecology surgery)

What is Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)?

for The EMSN was introduced to assist families left with large out-of-pocket medical bills after Medicare rebate. Under EMSN, families are entitled to receive additional rebates when they exceed the EMSN threshold.

​Unless there is a cap on an item number, once you’ve exceeded the threshold, Medicare will pay 80% of any out-of-pocket costs for the remainder of the calendar year. This includes Dr Fong’s consultation fees and services that have medicare item numbers such as pathology, imaging and fertility treatment.

The threshold is determined by the Federal Government and is reset on 1st January each year. For further information on EMSN click here.

All patients embarking on assisted reproductive treatment such as IVF. 

Q. What should I do?
​You should register for Medicare Safety Net For Families. It's important to do so even if you are on the same Medicare card. When you’re registered as a family, your medical costs are combined. Not only do you reach the threshold sooner but extra rebate is automatically deposited to you each time you make a medicare claim.
